Lab # 3: Osmotic Membrane
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to show the effect of water balance across an osmotic membrane.
Hypothesis: Osmotic pressure can be predicted for any solution that the egg will be placed in.
Materials Needed: 2 plastic cups, measured to 240 mL egg (raw, with shell) distilled water corn syrup white vinegar 100 mL graduated cylinder 10 mL graduated cylinder wax pencil thin-tip sharpie paper towels aluminum plate (for weighing egg) scale
Procedure: Did not deviate from lab procedure sheet.
Data: On first day, after we placed the egg in the vinegar, and we observed the formation of bubbles on the surface of the egg shell. On the second day, we noticed that the egg had "grown," the egg shell began to deteriorate, and the vinegar remaining in the cup was 10 mL than the previous day. After, we placed the egg in corn syrup and observed it 24 hours later (the third day of the lab). On the third day, the egg shriveled (felt like a cow-eye) and the volume of the liquid in the cup increased as well as the liquidity of the solution. After, we placed the egg in distilled water and it filtered through the membrane rapidly, causing the wrinkled to smooth back out and fill out the shape of the egg.
Calculations: First day (Friday) egg: 58.10 g vinegar volume in cup: 140 egg + vinegar: 200 mL vol of egg (200 mL egg+vinegar - 140 mL original measure of vinegar in cup): 60 mL
Second Day (Monday) egg: 79.87 vinegar volume in cup: 120 egg + vinegar volume: 190 vol of egg (190 mL egg+vinegar - 120 mL original measure of vinegar in cup): 70 mL
Third Day (Tuesday) egg: vinegar volume in cup: egg + vinegar: vol of egg ( mL egg+vinegar - mL original measure of vinegar in cup): mL
